Crucible in the Courtroom: Effective Cross-Examination of Defendants and Defense Witnesses

Course Description

In this workshop, students will learn the keys to a successful cross-examination. They will learn how to recognize different styles of testimony that defendants and defense witnesses present and develop techniques for effective cross-examination of them. Finally, students will learn concrete examples of how to limit the witness’ ability to evade questions on cross.

Learning Objectives

1. Learn techniques for reviewing a witness’ prior statements and identifying statements that are ripe cross-examination materials.

2. Learn techniques for cross-examining a defendant or defense witnesses in a manner that corroborates the victim’s statement or testimony.

3. Learn to cross examine a defendant or defense witness in a manner that helps the jury see a sexual or physical assault through the eyes of a victim.

4. Learn to incorporate trial themes into a cross examination.
